Mental Toughness: Setting Goals and Achieving Them
3, 2, 1….HAPPY NEW YEAR!! “New year, new me” is what we hear a lot when the tick of the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, but how many people actually stick to that affirmation? How many people, by the end of the year, are still pushing towards the goals they set for themselves on that sacred first day of the year? Well, we all know it’s not everyone, and only a small percentage of the people who set New Year goals actually achieve them.
It’s no different from setting life goals, or every day goals. We set goals to push ourselves towards something better. Better physique, better eating habits, getting more organized, the list is infinite. However, a lot of us fail to realize the key ingredients to accomplishing those goals. Here are some key components to setting goals and achieving them like a boss!
Set the Goal
The first step in achieving any goal is to identify the goal with specificity. For example, if the goal is to get in shape, identifying what “getting in shape” actually means is vital. To some people, getting in shape means to drop a few pounds, but keeping their basic physique. For others, getting in shape, means transforming their entire physique while also shedding pounds. Specifying what kind of shape is needed determines which eating habits, workout regimens, and planning is necessary for reaching that particular goal. Striving for better health is only one example of goal setting, but specificity about the goal being chased applies to any category. Whether it’s losing weight or improving your game, specificity is the foundation to setting and successfully attaining any goal.
Plan, Plan, Plan!
The age old saying ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’ is paramount in setting goals and accomplishing them. Whether you have a daily task list or are aiming for your ultimate life goal, creating some type of plan to attain those goals is important. Sometimes it only takes one plan, but it may take a few plans to ensure that everything flows as it should. The main thing is that you have one. Proper planning provides guidance and direction to help visions come to fruition. Jot lists or journals are great for writing out both goals and the plans to accompany them. Don’t delay, start your planning today!
Make Sure Goals Are Realistic
In order to make and realize some progress, the goal should be realistic. Losing 20 pounds or forming a six pack in one week, while that would be nice, is not realistic. This is where short-term vs. long-term goals come into play. It may be necessary to create several short-term goals in order to reach that ultimate long-term goal. If the goal is to lose a lot of weight, exercising a few more times or cutting back on certain foods weekly may be examples of short-term goals to achieve that 20 pound weight loss transformation. Whatever the goal, make sure it’s REALISTIC to keep the excitement and motivation to accomplish it alive!
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE. At the end of the day, if there is no accountability, a goal cannot exist nor be accomplished. That means taking responsibility for writing out the goals to begin with and sticking with the plan you put in place to help accomplish those goals. If needed, tell others about the goal, so they can help you stay on board. Setting a goal is usually not the issue, sticking with and believing in the process to accomplish it is the tough part. Remaining mentally tough throughout the journey is probably the most important piece of accomplishing any goal. Push yourself and be open to others doing the same!
In the end, setting goals does not have to feel like it is being done in vain. No singular formula exists that shows how to accomplish goals. Do your research and find out which methods work best for you and crush your goals like a boss! Happy goal setting!
